Beyond the Everyday

June 25th marked the day my sweetie turned 30.  To mark the day I planned a small birthday party for Mel at Kingsway sushi.  We ate to our hearts content and then decided to go to Millenium Karaoke in Richmond for a bit.  A big focus of the gifts this year went towards Mel’s new hobby of scrapbooking.  Needless to say she felt spoiled by all of the gifts.  One of her best friends Terrence and Teresa bought her a fish!  Pretty cool!

Unfortunately I had a gig SUPER early in the morning and wasn’t able to party with everyone, but I think most of them had a good time.  Mel and I were on a boat with a whole lot of graduates.

I had a couple of small surprises for Mel, one of which I have to thank Ron from Anna’s Cake House.  You really made her night and I thank you sooooo much for that!  Ron helped me put an image of Mel’s two new favorite stuffed animals onto her cake.  She loved it so much she cut all away around them so she could leave it for another day to see!

We went to Pearl Castle in Richmond the other day for dinner because I had a late night.  Ended up eating the Curry Chicken Nuggets with Apple and Mel had the Curry Fish with Apple.  Both were very tasty.  Definitely thumbs up if you like curry with a hint of sweetness!

I love  Vancouver.  It is such a beautiful place.  I believe I am extremely lucky to have my family move to this wonderful province.  With the rush of everyday life, sometimes we forget to stop and really appreciate all the beauty there is around us.  I had a chance to enjoy the great outdoors over the last few days and took the time to record some of the wonderful things I’ve seen.  I hope you enjoy the photos.

Last night I had a day off for once and decided to really go out and photograph for myself.  Sometimes as a photographer you are sooooo caught up in your own business and photographing people, that you lose sight of the love you have for the craft.

To unwind from the hustle and bustle of the everyday, I took the time out by Stanley park’s totem poles with my bag and a handful of filters.  There is quite the argument in the digital world about post processing things in photoshop.  I have an oldschool mentality in that I really believe getting a photo right in camera is the best way.  So for those people who see this and are wondering, these are not HDR’s, other than a little sharpening and patching the odd floaty thing, nothing else was done to them.

I used a series of filters to achieve the tints as well as gradient filters and ND filters to get the look of the water and balancing of the exposure of the buildings and water.  Was it worth it?  I think so.

Today we took a little break from life to go play in the sun.  Both Mel and I have been really busy lately and really haven’t had much time to ourselves.  I decided to go down to the Kite Festival at Vanier Park.

To my surprise there were lots of ENORMOUS kites flying around!  We on the other hand cheaped out and bought a couple of dollar store kites.  No worries though, it’s the activity that we wanted to participate in, not break the bank.  We flew the kites for a while.  Another first for Mel, she quite enjoyed the experience.  A couple of nose dives with our kites occurred and we ended up finally packing it in for some food.

We made our way down the road to GoFish, a little fish and chip place just outside of Granville Island.  It was busy as usual and the food took a while, however I am pleased to announce that the food was great!  We ordered an Oyster Tacone, Salmon Tacone and a Scallop Sandwich.  We ranked the food favorites in the same order!  I was impressed at the quality of the food even though it was hopping busy.  It was a great way to end a nice afternoon.

I hope all of you had a chance to go enjoy the great outdoors!

Well… most of you who know me would have assumed a photo lab.  But nope.  In fact I’m up at SFU in Mel’s lab right now.  I took the afternoon off today to do a little relaxing and to have some personal time.  Even though I’m in the lab, I’m happy…  I’ve got my headphones on with the tunes going and I’m blogging about some of the things that have been going on.

I have really loved blogging.  For me it’s been a great way of documenting some of the things that I do in a year.  Sometimes with how fast life passes us by, you forget some of the little things that happen.  I have found that this way of documenting my life is a great outlet.  Do any of you feel that way?  Do you have a blog?  Post your blog url in the comment section!  I’d love to check out what goes on in your world too!

Seeing I’m up at Mel’s lab, I thought I would post some photos of the lab itself and a photo of her experimental test tube rack!
